What Is Fashion?

Fashion is a style of clothing and a way of self-expression. It can be influenced by culture, environment and socio-economic status. It is a constantly changing phenomenon. Fashion changes over time as people adapt to new circumstances and environments. People have a tendency to copy the styles of others they like or respect. It is believed that fashion trends reflect societal change and the financial interests of designers and manufacturers.

Fashion can be defined as the prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette, socializing, etc. Fashions can vary considerably within a society according to age, social class, generation, occupation and geography. For example, if an older person dresses in the latest young fashions, they may look ridiculous. This is why the terms “fashionista” and “fashion victim” are used to describe people who slavishly follow current fashions.

Trends can be fickle and can quickly become out of date or even look costumey. This is especially true for certain types of clothing, such as ripped jeans or plunging necklines. But classic styles, such as the hourglass silhouettes of the 1950s or tuxedo pants with satin stripes, can transcend trends and remain in style for decades.

Designers seek inspiration from past subcultures and other cultural sources as they create new trends. For example, punk and Y2K fashions have been transformed into a more subtle blend of elements with the latest high-fashion models. The fashion industry also looks to celebrity and other public figures for insight into what styles are currently popular.
