The modern automobile was developed in the late 19th century, largely by Karl Benz. This invention led to the development of mass production techniques, which made cars affordable for middle class families. The scientific and technical building blocks for the automobile began several hundred years ago, when Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens invented a type of internal combustion engine sparked by gunpowder. The modern automobile was developed by the 1860s and ’70s, in Germany and France, by such inventors as Gottlieb Daimler, Carl Benz and Nicolaus Otto. These early cars, which were often called “horseless carriages,” weighed hundreds of pounds and were slow and difficult to control.
