Home Improvement 101

Home improvement

Home improvement is a broad term for any renovation or remodeling project that increases the functionality and beauty of your home. Projects can range from painting and re-grouting tile to adding a deck, putting in new windows or doors, upgrading the kitchen or bathroom, and more. Many homeowners take on home improvements as a way to make their houses feel like their own. Others do it to prepare their homes for the market or to be more energy efficient. Whatever your motivation, the key is to choose projects that will add value to your house and will appeal to the majority of potential buyers.

It’s also important to understand the difference between a home improvement and a remodel. While some home improvements do add value to your house, recouping the cost of a remodel is not always possible.

Some home improvement projects can actually decrease your property value if they are not done properly. Be sure to hire a qualified contractor, and do your research to ensure they are licensed and insured. You should also check online reviews and ask for references from previous clients.

Don’t overspend on home improvements that will not increase the value of your house, or even cover the cost of the materials and labor. If you are doing home improvements to increase the chances of selling your house, talk with a real estate agent before starting any major projects. Also, be sure to pay cash for home improvements rather than borrowing money and paying interest on the debt.
