Common Issues in Law

Law

Law is a system of rules that governmental and social institutions enforce in order to ensure that people and property behave properly. Different aspects of law can be broadly classified as a science, an art, or a combination of both. Common issues include property and debt, immigration, consumer rights, and criminal law. Individuals can also make legally binding contracts and arbitration agreements.

Competition law is a major area of law and traces its roots to ancient Roman decrees against price fixing and the English restraint of trade doctrine. Its modern form is based on anti-cartel statutes from the turn of the 20th century. The laws prohibit businesses that attempt to fix market prices or control competition by controlling other businesses. Other examples of law that affect consumers include airline baggage insurance and directives on unfair contract terms.

The issue of vaccination mandates is also a major issue. In the years to come, the issue will likely become more contentious. For example, in 2022, health care employers may face a dilemma between implementing mandatory vaccination policies or removing them. In September 2021, President Biden issued a mandate to include vaccination policies in health care workplaces for federal contractors and private-sector businesses with more than 100 employees. In addition, President Biden made COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for health care workers in hospitals participating in Medicare and Medicaid. The regulations were a major source of controversy and were later challenged by different states.
