Business services are the various activities a business takes to maintain operations and generate revenue. They differ from economic services, which deliver value directly to consumers. Instead, they involve the building of service systems in which both consumers and providers act as service producers and providers. They are also distinct from product businesses, which sell goods rather than services.

A variety of industries provide business services, from banking and insurance to cleaning and landscaping. Some are focused on business-to-business (B2B) relationships, while others serve consumer clients. The business service sector is one of the largest contributors to the economy in many countries.

The four critical elements of a successful business-to-business service are customer intimacy, employee involvement, value co-creation and process design. Managers must master these tools in a context that is very different from that of a traditional product business.

Companies often outsource the provision of some business services. This allows them to focus on core competencies and reduce overhead costs. In addition, service providers may offer specialized expertise and experience that is not available in-house.

For example, many companies use third-party logistics firms to handle warehousing, picking and packing for eCommerce fulfillment. These companies often have warehouses in different locations and can scale up or down to meet demand, making them an efficient and cost-effective option.

Another common outsourced business service is accounting. This can include everything from bookkeeping to tax preparation. This helps companies avoid hiring in-house accountants and can help them save money on payroll taxes. It can also help companies stay compliant with regulations and laws.
